The hopes of football lovers across Nigeria were dashed again as the Super Eagles of Nigeria were held to a 1-1 draw by minnow, Zimbabwe in their second match of the 2026 World Cup Qualifier series.
This latest set back is coming on the heels of their uninspiring display against the crocodiles of Lesotho at the Nest of Champions in Uyo in the opening match on Thursday.
The Super Eagles who were expected to outclass their opponent on Sunday in Rwanda produced a performance that made their failure against Lesotho look like a pattern rather than an unexpected result.
Despite parading a team of Europe based footballers, the Super Eagles could not produce an attempt throughout the first half. It even got worse for the Nigerians as Walter Musona’s long range free kick found its way past Francis Uzoho to hand the Zimbabweans the lead in the 26th minutes of the encounter.
Leicester City forward, Kelechi Iheanacho who was brought on in the second half found space and struck in the 67th minute to draw the Super Eagles level but neither him nor his teammates could score the goal that would have handed Nigeria the full three points.
They had settle for another draw which puts their world cup hopes in jeopardy. The Super Eagles have now collected two points from a possible six much to the disappointment of Nigerians fans who are still haunted by the memories of how the Super Eagles lost the 2022 World Cup ticket to Ghana.
Some fans are already urging the NFF to sack Jose Peseiro because of the team’s poor displays in the recent matches.
