A burial reception ceremony ended on a sad note for attendees as the ceiling and part of the wall of an event centre collapsed, injuring several guests with at least six of them hospitalized.
The incident took place in Ijero-Ekiti at a burial ceremony held over the weekend.
According to reports, F and G Event Centre which is located along Ijero-Ido Ekiti road had its roof and walls collapsed around 4pm during a burial ceremony reception with attendees sustaining various degrees of injuries.
The lawmaker representing Ijero Constituency in Ekiti State House of Assembly, Mr Ademola Ojo explained that the unfortunate incident happened without warning and steps have been taken to save lives.
He said “An exercise for a burial ceremony reception was ongoing when we heard a deep crack on the wall and suddenly, the Plaster of Paris (POP) caved in. The roof fell on those who were seated inside the auditorium.
“This caused a stampede. Many were wounded in the process while some occupants sustained serious bodily injuries. I was here with the chairman of the local government with fire service men to rescue the organizer of the ceremony.
“Those who were seriously wounded were immediately taken to the hospital for treatment.”
