Sunshine Stars’ difficult start to the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) season continued yesterday as the Akure based team broke the hearts of the teeming supporters after conceding an added time goal that denied them victory over Rangers International Football Club in Akure.
The club which had picked up a point after a 1-1 draw against Rivers United in Port Harcourt in their previous encounter was expected to pick up maximum points in Akure on Sunday but fell behind very early in the match as Godwin Obaje gave the Flying Antelope the lead in the 4th minute.
However, it did not take long before the home team restored parity as Yusuf Ibrahim scored an equalizer in the 13th minute to get the home fans buzzing with hopes of victory for their darling team.
The home side kept the momentum and deservedly took the lead in the 76th minute through Moses Omodumeke. They held on to the lead till four minutes into stoppage time when Jonas Emmanuel struck for Rangers to level the tie at 2-2 and snatch one point for the away team to the disappointment of the home team and their fans.
As it stands, Sunshine Stars are 13th on the log with 9 points from 8 matches. They are 8 points behind Lobi Stars of Makurdi who lead the table with 17 points from the same number of matches. Sunshine Stars will be on the road to face Bayelsa United in their next match.
