Players and officials of Nigeria Professional Football League side, Sunshine Stars of Akure have been attacked by gunmen along Ore-Benin Expressway.
The incident which took place on Thursday has left the entire team and their management in shock as they struggle to come to terms with why they were attacked while they continue to battle to attend to their wounded players and officials.
According to a statement released by the Media Officer, Sunshine stars FC, Michael Akintunde, the team came under attack from unknown gunmen on their way to Edo state where they are expected to face Insurance of Benin in an NPFL match.
It read “It saddens our hearts to inform Nigerians, especially football lovers that out team was attacked few minutes ago along Ore-Benin Expressway to honor an Elite League tie against Insurance of Benin, scheduled for this weekend.
“Our ball boy was shot in the horrible attack, our team manager and other club officials including players are seriously injured .
“It took the intervention of officers of the Federal Road Safety corp that helped rescue the injured officials and the shot individual to a nearby hospital. We hope you join us in prayers.”
