The Super Eagles of Nigeria came up short in their quest to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after they suffered a 2-1 loss to Ivory Coast in the final match.
The match which took place on Sunday night saw the Nigerians take a first half lead before surrending it in the second half and eventually losing the match during normal time.
Nigeria’s Captain, Troost Ekong handed the Super Eagles the lead with a towering header that silenced the Ivorian crowd and made Nigerians inside the stadium and across the world dreamt of winning the title since they last did in 2013.
The Ivorians came back in the second half and scored through a Frank Kessie header from a corner kick to restore parity before Sebastian Haller scored a late goal to hand the host nation a win that completed their fairy tale journey in the continental football competition.
The Super Eagles, who gave good account of themselves will have to pick themselves up and go again while the victorious Elephants will continue to celebrate their triumph on home soil.
Super Eagles defender, Troost Ekong was named the “Man of the competition” after emerging as the best player in the showpiece competition.
