Manchester City Manager, Pep Guardiola has been awarded an honorary degree by the University of Manchester.
The ceremony took place on Monday, June 9, 2025, at Whitworth Hall where the University bestowed this honorary doctorate upon Guardiola in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to the city, both on and off the pitch.
The Spanish tactician has achieved so much success on the football pitch since joining Manchester City in 2016 with his ingenuity transforming the club from a struggling side into the most dominant Premier League in recent years.
Pep Guardiola has led the team to six Premier League titles and won the 2023 Champions League trophy which is the club’s first.
The award also recognizes the contributions of the manager beyond football, notably through his Guardiola Sala Foundation, which contributes to the community.
At the ceremony, Guardiola revealed that Manchester means a lot to him as he has enjoyed his time in the city.
He said “Manchester means so much to me. I have spent nine years here and it has become home. The people, the culture, my incredible football club, my colleagues it is all so special to me and my family.”
President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester, Professor Duncan Ivison eulogized Guardiola as an inspiration for many because of his contributions on and off the football pitch.
