The management of the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH), Ondo, has received the National Universities Commission (NUC) re-accreditation team for the Bachelor of Dentistry and Surgery programme.
The exercise, which is scheduled to last four days, aims to assess the quality of facilities, teaching, and training standards at the institution.
Welcoming the team, the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Michael Gbala, expressed delight at their courtesy visit to the management of the Teaching Hospital.
He acknowledged the enormous challenges facing the health sector in Nigeria, particularly the shortage of skilled human resources and high cost of electricity, describing the gap as “unbearable.”
Despite these challenges, Dr. Gbala noted that UNIMEDTH has made concerted efforts toward infrastructure development and attracting competent healthcare professionals.
He expressed appreciation to the administration of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for his unwavering support, especially in the health sector.
According to him, “Mr. Governor’s investment in the new 500-bed hospital building, with Six theatre suites to be running simultaneously when completed, stands as a testament to his commitment to advancing health infrastructure in Ondo State.”
Dr. Gbala also commended the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) and its collaboration with the Teaching Hospital, describing their operations and professionalism as exemplary.
He further disclosed that the University is lucky to be one of the 18 Universities to benefit from special TETFund intervention grants aimed at developing the University capacity in training Medical and Health Personnel with a significant portion to be directed towards enhancing Dental education and Dental services.
Earlier, the leader of the NUC re-accreditation team, Prof. Mabel Etetafia, stated that the visit was aimed at ensuring that UNIMEDTH meets the minimum academic standards required for the Bachelor of Dentistry and Surgery programme.
She emphasized that the exercise seeks to promote excellence, safeguard the interests of students, parents, and other stakeholders, and ensure that universities continue to deliver quality education and training in line with national and global standards.
