Brazilian Police Raid Former President’s Home Amid Criminal Trial

The home and political headquarters of former Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro was raided by the police in Brazil on Friday with the security agency ordering Bolsonaro to wear an electronic ankle tag, barring him from speaking to foreign officials, approaching embassies and prohibiting him from using social media.

The police also seized an unspecified amount of US dollars in cash.

The restrictions placed on the former President were ordered by Brazil’s Supreme Court after concerns that Bolsonaro may flee the country, amid his trial over an alleged involvement in the plot to overturn the results of the 2022 presidential election to remain in power.

The police also accused Bolsonaro and his son, Eduardo, of conspiring with the US government to impose sanctions against Brazilian officials.

Speaking outside the police station on Friday, Bolsonaro described the ankle tag placed on his ankle as a “supreme humiliation” claiming that he never thought of fleeing Brazil.

He added that police seized about 14,000 US dollars from him and claimed the money was for his personal use, adding that he had the receipts to prove it.

The raid came as US President Donald Trump tried to force his current Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to end the criminal trial against Bolsonaro by threatening to cripple Brazil with tariffs.

Bolsonaro could face more than forty years imprisonment if found guilty of masterminding the attempted coup.

He is among 34 people charged with five crimes, including attempting the coup. Part of the coup plot, prosecutors allege, involved a plan to potentially assassinate Lula, his vice president and a minister of the Supreme Court.
