English Premier League giant, Chelsea Football Club suffered a shocking 1-0 loss on Tuesday night as they were beaten by Middlesbrough in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final clash at the Riverside Stadium.
The Blues, who have endured a season plagued with disappointment visited Middlesbrough on Tuesday night with the hope of getting a positive result that will make the return leg more easier for them to prosecute at home.
However, they failed to establish their dominance over the EFL Championship team and were made to pay for their lapses in the 37th minute as Hayden Hackney connected with a pass from Isaiah Jones to open the scoring after a swift counter attack move by the home team.
Despite flurry of chances created by the Blues, they failed to put any of them inside the net. Cole Palmer, who started the match as a makeshift striker was the most guilty of the lot as he had four chances to put his team ahead in the first half but failed to score any of them.
The second half followed the same pattern as the away side had much of the ball but unable to break through the resolute Boro defense. The Blues brought on the likes of Armando Broja and Mykhailo Mudryk to help salvage the match but failed to achieve their targets as Middlesbrough ultimately secured a 1-0 victory.
The Blues will have to stage a comeback in the second leg at the Stamford Bridge if they will have a chance to play in the final where they could go up against either Liverpool Football Club or Fulham.
