Nigeria’s female basketball team and medal hopefuls, D’Tigress have been knocked out of the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics after losing to the female basketball team of the United States of America.
The Rena Wakama led side put up a good fight against their much fancied opponents but eventually succumbed to a 88-74 loss which condemned them to leaving the tournament at the quarter-final stage.
The D’Tigress became the first African basketball team male and female to reach the quarter-final stage at the Olympics after their stellar performances in the group stage which earned them victories over top nations like Australia and Canada.
Although the Nigerian ladies were having a good run in the tournament, they were clear underdogs against the United States of America and could not claim yet another scalp as the Americans made sure that an upset was impossible.
The Coach, Rena Wakama was appointed head coach of the Nigeria women’s basketball team just 13 months ago, making her the first female in history to take on this role.
She has become the first coach to lead an African basketball team to two wins in a single Olympic Games and the first coach to lead an African team, male or female, to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
