Football lovers have reacted with disappointment after Ondo State’s sole campaigner in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Sunshine Stars of Akure have been relegated from the league.
Sunshine Stars are rooted in 19th position on the standings have confirmed their place in the second division of Nigeria football for at least one season after suffering a 2-1 loss to Niger Tornadoes in Ogun state.
With the defeat, the Owena Whales who have seen their fortunes plummet from having a good start to the season to enduring a terrible end to it will be tasked with the job of finding their way back to the top flight as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, club supporters expressed their disappointments in the team’s eventual relegation by addressing people and issues they believe led to the negative run of results that sent the team out of the Premier Football League.
The fans vented their frustrations on the club’s official page on Facebook where they blamed the poor management of the club for the relegation.
Usiosefe said “I am pained for my guys in sunshine. The sack of boboye was uncalled for, the timing of d stadium renovation was wrong. The entire greedy board should b sacked. NNL nor easy ooooo”
Lawal said “Sunshine Stars FC played all NPFL matches as away team. Congratulations to the Ondo State Government for NNL achievement.”
Emmanuel Olonibua said “Painful. I can’t blame the players. Anyway, I blame the government and the management. I think this administration make an history when it comes to football. Congratulations to them all.”
Opeyhemi Oyewale said “Football in Ondo state is a mess, nothing to show for it, no commitment from the players and Government.”
Ayoola Oladimeji said “All these boys need to be offloaded completely. Ondo state government needs to intervene technically and financially. Up sunshine ! Up stars.”
Osowe Gbenga said “Sunshine don go shine for NNL when we fail to do the needful at the begining.”
Olamidotun Akinjisola said “They’ve been on life support for years, this is so pathetic. No team represent Ondo State in any Nigeria top-flight league. The women’s team relegated last season as well.”
Adeniyi Adebayo said “To come back from relegation from the southern conference of the NNL, no be beans. A club like Sunshine Stars, with the way it’s being run, they might not come back to the NPFL in the next 3 or 4 seasons, if not more. My darling Sunshine Stars, Ọlọrun A Wa Pẹlu ẹ.”
Sunshine Stars’ relegation from the top-flight comes one season after the female team, Sunshine Queens were relegation from the Nigeria Women Football League.
