The Flying Eagles of Nigeria continued their strong showing at the FIFA U20 World cup in Argentina by defeating the host nation 2-0 to secure their place among the last eight teams in the tournament.
The Ladan Bosso led side bounced back from their 2-0 defeat to Brazil to defeat their usual nemesis, Argentina in a very entertaining encounter at the Estadio San Juan del Bicentenario in San Juan.
The Flying Eagles who came into the match as an overwhelming underdogs showed that their defeat against Brazil was just a blip as they defeated the Argentines despite the massive support of the home crowd.
The first stanza of the match ended with a 0-0 scoreline as the Argentines could not convert any of their chances before the referee blew his whistle for half-time despite being the better side.
The second half resumed in similar fashion as the host went out looking for the opening goal of the match. However, it was the Nigerians who broke the deadlock when Ibrahim Muhammad got a clever pass from Ume Emmanuel, took a touch before putting the ball inside the Argentines’ net.
The host responded to the setback by launching barrages of attacks on the Flying Eagles goal area but they could not breach the Flying Eagles’ resolute defence.
Substitute, Rilwanu Sarki killed off any hope of an Argentine comeback one minute into stoppage time as he headed the ball into the net after receiving a delightful pass from Victor Eletu.
The Argentines continued pushing for a goal but could not get any before the referee blew the whistle for full-time sending the Flying Eagles into the quarter finals and the host nation crashing out.
