Nigeria under 20 men’s national team, the Flying Eagles defeated their Dominican Republic opponents 2-1 to pick up all three points in their opening match of the ongoing FIFA U20 World cup in Argentina.
The Flying Eagles who were clear favourites against the less fancied North American side were landed a massive blow when Edison Azcona gave the Dominican Republic side the lead in the 23rd minute of the encounter.
Ladan Bosso was able to rally his troop and they got back on level terms courtesy of an unfortunate own goal as Guillermo de Pena put the ball into his own net in the 31st minutes.
The Flying Eagles continued to pile the pressure on their opponents and got a deserved lead in the 71st minute of the match as Samson Lawal showed great composure to score a well taken goal.
The Flying Eagles could not extend their lead despite a flurry of chances that came their way. They managed to preserve the lead and got the much needed win before they take on Italy and Brazil in their other group matches.
Meanwhile, in the other group match, Italy were able to stop a Brazilian fight back as they held on to secure a 3-2 win. The Italians had gotten a shocking 3-0 first half lead but the Brazilians scored twice in the second half to set up a tense finale. However, they could not score the equalizer before the referee blew the whistle to end the match.
