Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on the town of Owo in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State after suspected cult clashes led to the death of four people.
This order was made known in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Ondo State,
Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan on January 6, 2025.
It read “Due to the ongoing violent cult clashes and security disturbances in Owo which have led to loss of lives, the Governor of Ondo State, Hon Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has ordered a dusk-to-dawn (from 7pm to 6am) curfew in the town, till further notice.
“All residents are required to remain indoors during the curfew. Only essential services, such as hospitals, emergency services, and law enforcement will be exempted from the curfew.
“The Governor has also asked security agencies in the State to enforce the curfew, ensure safety of lives, properties, arrest perpetrators of the violence and restore peace to the community.”
It was widely reportedly earlier on Monday that a former youth leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, Fisayo Oladipupo was shot dead in the early hours of the day by suspected cultists.
In retaliation, suspected cultists loyal to the slain APC chieftain reportedly shot four persons including two people who were affected by stray bullets.
The corpse of the deceased has been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre in Owo.
The incident has thrown the community into shock and mourning, with residents members expressing concerns over the growing insecurity in the area.
The Olowo of Owo, Oba Gbadegesin Ogunoye appealed to all parties to sheath their swords and embrace peace.
The state Command of the Nigerian police while confirming the development through the Spokesperson of the command, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya revealed that the command has deployed their personnel to the community to maintain law and order.
She said “We can’t confirm if an APC Chieftain is affected, but four people have been confirmed dead; Normalcy has returned through the intervention of the Police, and efforts are on to arrest the perpetrators of the act.”
