It was a night of disappointment for Kylian Mbappe and French football giant, Paris Saint Germain as they were kicked out of this season’s UEFA Champions League competition after suffering a 1-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund in the French Capital.
The French side who had lost the first leg 1-0 in Germany came into the match needing to win in order to ensure their qualification for the final match of Europe’s elite club football competition but endured a frustrating night at home as they were beaten by a clinical Dortmund team.
Led by Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and a host of other world-class footballers, Paris Saint Germain could not breach Borussia Dortmund’s “Yellow Wall” defense in over 180 minutes of football action and paid the price for not been clinical when it mattered most.
The closest they came to scoring a goal on Tuesday night were when they hit the woodwork. They hit the goal posts and cross bar on four occasions on the night.
Kylian Mbappe, Nuno Mendes, Vitinha and Warren Zaire-Emery all had their shots bounce off the woodwork after beating the goalkeeper and the entire Borussia Dortmund defense which showed just how unlucky they were on the night.
Amidst Paris Saint Germain’s missed chances, veteran defender and FIFA World Cup winner, Mats Hummels scored a fantastic header in the 50th minute to extend his team’s aggregate lead to 2-0.
Hummels scored the header after a brilliant corner kick was delivered by Julian Brandt. The corner was met by Hummels inside the box and he steered it in off the right post which left goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma helpless.
The home side pushed very hard to score goals but could not score any as their efforts were blocked, saved and crashing against the woodwork until referee Daniel Orsato blew the whistle to end the match.
With the result, Borussia Dortmund have qualified for the final match of this season’s UEFA Champions League which will be their first since their last appearance ten years ago.
They will be hoping to go a step further this time by winning the trophy and banish the memory of their agonizing 2-1 loss to FC Bayern Munich in the final ten years ago.
Club legend, Marco Reus, who has announced his decision to leave the Signal Iduna Park at the end of the season will be hoping to win the trophy as a parting gift to the club. He was part of the team that lost to FC Bayern Munich ten years ago.
Meanwhile, FC Bayern Munich will be taking on Real Madrid CF tonight in the second leg of their own semi-final clash. The Bavarians will be hoping to recreate another all German final against Borussia Dortmund.
They will have to overcome Real Madrid who are the most dominant team in the competition’s history. They will be hoping to finish the job in Spain after playing out a 2-2 draw in Germany.
