The influx of unqualified teachers into the teaching profession has been identified as a major factor contributing massively to the problems facing primary and secondary school education in Nigeria.
This revelation was made by the National President, The Alumni Association, Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Dr. Gboyega Oyebade during the institution’s 59th Founder’s Day Anniversary.
He said “nothing is more dangerous to education than to have unqualified teachers teaching in Nigeria. It is like a quack doctor conducting intricate surgery on patients. That is obscene drama, worse than public pornography. Teaching goes beyond dictating notes to students. It is an all-encompassing life.”
He described as shocking the recent comment by the Registrar, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) about the influx of unqualified teachers into private schools across the South western parts of the country and called for a change to be effected in order to improve the standard of education.
“we must be wounded at heart to learn from the registrar, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, Professor Josiah Ajiboye, in his publication on 4th May, 2023 in Punch Newspaper that over 90% of private school teachers in South-West are unqualified due to their lack of qualifications to enable them to register with the council. This statistics is not a good tribute to Chief Obafemi Awolowo.”
