Nigeria and Africa’s sole representative on the Men’s Ballon D’or shortlist, Ademola Lookman scored a brace as the Super Eagles of Nigeria decimated the Cheetahs of Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.
The current African Footballer Of the year, Victor Osimhen also came off the bench to score a spectacular goal which marked his return to the national team after his feud with former manager Finidi George.
The 3-0 victory for the Super Eagles under the guidance of interim boss, Augustine Eguavoen marked a sweet revenge for Nigeria over Benin Republic and former Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr who handed the Super Eagles a shocking 2-1 loss when both sides met recently in a World Cup qualifier.
While Lookman’s brace justified his position on the shortlist of thirty best footballers on the planet, it also justify his position as the leading candidate to be crowned the next African Footballer of The Year.
For Victor Osimhen, it was a triumphant return to football actions for him as he scored within six minutes of coming off the bench to put an end to the turbulence that has surrounded his career with the national team and his club side in recent time.
The Super Eagles will now shift their focus from the dominant victory over Benin Republic to their next match against Rwanda. The match will be taking place on Tuesday and away from Nigeria where their mental and physical abilities will be needed to be stronger to survive against the Rwandans.
