The Director-General of the National Agency For Food and Drugs and Administration, NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye has explained the reasons that necessitated the decision to ban alcoholic beverages sold on sachets and other small containers across Nigeria.
She addressed the media on the enforcement of the ban on alcoholic beverages in sachets and in PET and glass bottles below 200ml, citing serious public health concerns linked to the easy accessibility and abuse of such products, particularly among youths.
Prof. Adeyeye explained that the decision followed extensive consultations involving the @Fmohnigeria, @fccpcnigeria, and industry stakeholders, and is aimed at reducing alcohol-related harm, not prohibiting alcohol consumption. Approved alcoholic products remain legal in compliant packaging formats.
She reaffirmed NAFDAC’s commitment to firm but fair enforcement nationwide, in collaboration with relevant agencies, while engaging stakeholders responsibly. She called for public and industry cooperation, stressing that the protection of lives and public health remains the Agency’s foremost priority.
