The Comptroller, Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone C, Bashir Balogun, has warned smugglers sternly, declaring that his leadership will intensify efforts to curb illicit trade and revenue leakages while fostering legitimate trade.

According to a statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Customs, Rose Nche, Comptroller Balogun made the declaration on Wednesday, 26 March 2025, while receiving stakeholders from Tinapa Free Trade Zone at the Unit’s headquarters in Owerri.

Commending the stakeholders for their contributions to revenue generation for the service and Nigeria at large, Comptroller Balogun warned that smugglers would find no refuge under his watch.

Highlighting the dangers of smuggling, he described it as economic sabotage for anyone to bring prohibited goods into the country. He noted that such acts counter the government’s policy of revitalising local industries and providing employment opportunities for young people.

He stressed the importance of compliance with customs regulations, urging importers and exporters to familiarise themselves with the prohibition list to avoid penalties.

Comptroller Balogun also underscored the increasing risks associated with smuggling small arms, light weapons, and illicit drugs such as tramadol and cannabis sativa, emphasising that the Unit has devised intelligence-driven strategies to counter these threats. “As we battle smugglers, our eagle eyes will also remain focused on duty evasion.”

He reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the core mandates of the Nigeria Customs Service, including plugging revenue leakages, enforcement, and facilitating legitimate trade.

He charged his officers to maintain discipline and step up operations, assuring them that the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, has provided the necessary resources to enhance their effectiveness.

“Our 24-hour patrol operations have been strengthened for greater efficiency, and we call on stakeholders to support the fight against smuggling to protect Nigeria’s economy,” he concluded.
