The Ogun I Customs Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reaffirmed its uncompromising stance against smuggling, announcing fresh seizures worth ₦1.4 billion in just one month.

Comptroller Godwin Otunla, addressing journalists on Thursday, 21 August 2025, vowed that under his watch, the Command would never bow to economic saboteurs bent on undermining Nigeria’s economy and security.

“Barely six weeks ago, precisely on 3 July 2025, I addressed you on the seizures we recorded, particularly in the area of illicit drugs and their means of conveyance.

“Today, I stand here to make a firm commitment that the Command under my leadership will not succumb to the antics of recalcitrant economic saboteurs working against our nation’s economy and security,” he declared.”

The latest interceptions include: 4,424 bags of 50kg foreign parboiled rice, 50 sacks and 1,936 parcels of cannabis sativa (coconut-sized), 105 used pneumatic tyres, 21 bales and 3 sacks of second-hand clothing, 3 foreign used vehicles (including a Rolls-Royce valued at ₦1 billion) and 6,400 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS)

On the issue of revenue, Comptroller Otunla disclosed that the Command collected ₦45,054,191 in July 2025, representing a 27.47% rise from ₦35,327,852 in July 2024.

He attributed the increase to stricter compliance, improved border operations, and stronger stakeholder engagement.

The seized cannabis was handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Receiving the items, Idiroko Special Area Commander, Ekundayo Williams, commended the sustained partnership between both agencies.

“Today’s seizure is the third handed over to us by Customs in just two months. The synergy we share against drug trafficking is robust, and I have no doubt that what we have done today will positively impact our economy and the lives of our future leaders.”
