The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ondo/Ekiti Area Command, has reaffirmed its commitment to national security and public health by handing over 140 sacks of cannabis sativa, weighing 1,400 kilograms and valued at ₦112 million, to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
A statement issued on Tuesday, 15 April 2025, by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Customs Herbert Dzungwenen, revealed that the illicit substance, seized in December 2024 in Ekiti State, was intercepted while being transported by two suspects. The formal handover occurred on Monday, 14 April, at the NDLEA office in Akure.
Speaking at the event, Customs Area Controller Comptroller Morenikeji Bewaji described the seizure as a vital step in the fight against drug trafficking. “Had this consignment made it into circulation, the consequences would have been dire,” she stated.
She highlighted the growing threat of cannabis trafficking and reaffirmed the command’s determination to curb the menace. “Inter-agency collaboration remains key. Our partnership with the NDLEA has yielded significant results, and we are committed to strengthening it further to reduce, if not eliminate, the trafficking of illicit substances.”
Comptroller Bewaji also urged the public to support Customs’ efforts by providing credible information, and praised the NDLEA for its dedication, assuring continued cooperation towards achieving a drug-free Nigeria.
In his remarks, NDLEA Commander of Narcotics for Ondo State, Nanzing Sallah, represented by Deputy Commander Daramola Olumuyiwa, commended Customs for the seizure and affirmed the agency’s continued collaboration with the Service.
