Super Eagles of Nigeria and Galatasaray forward, Victor Osimhen bagged an impressive brace for the Nigeria national team to secure a 2-0 win in their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier match in Rwanda.
The match, which was coach Eric Sekou Chelle’s first in charge of the Super Eagles was a must win for the star-studded squad if they wish to be part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup party in USA, Canada and Mexico.
It did not take too long before the Super Eagles took the lead as a free kick taken by Ademola Lookman in the 11th minute of the match found its way to the back post where Victor Osimhen was lurking and the 2023 African footballer of the year slammed it home with deadly precision.
The Super Eagles looked lively as they continued to push their host around inside the Stade Amahoro in Kigali. They dominated possession and restricted the Rwandans to their own half of the pitch.
With the way the Super Eagles played, they looked more likely to score the next goal of the match and they did that in first half stoppage time as Victor Osimhen was sent through on goal by Samuel Chukwueze and the hitman lobbed the goalkeeper to score his second goal of the match.
The Rwandans improve their game in the second half and managed to trouble the Super Eagles’ defense line but their efforts ended in futility as the Super Eagles secured a 2-0 win which was their first win of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier campaign.
Meanwhile, Super Eagles’ coach, Eric Sekou Chelle was delighted as he began his reign as the team’s handler with a massive win which not only move the team up the table but showed Nigerians how good he is tactically and how much he can achieve with the team.
Also, Victor Osimhen’s brace against Rwanda moved him closer to breaking Rashidi Yekini’s all-time goal record for the Super Eagles. The 24 year old striker now has 25 goals for the Super Eagles which places him 12 goals behind Rashidi Yekini’s 37 goal haul for the national team.
Osimhen will be hoping to add to his tally when the Super Eagles host Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Monday in another crucial FIFA World Cup qualifier match.
