A Police inspector, Effiong Bassey, allegedly opened fire at Atakpa Divisional Police Headquarters in Cross River State, killing one woman and injuring two others.

It was gathered that the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday after Bassey returned from night duty at Ekondo Microfinance Bank.

According to the Cross River State Police Command spokesperson, Ugbo Irene, the inspector displayed erratic behaviour and refused to surrender his AK-47 rifle.

“Inspector Bassey barricaded the station’s gate, preventing entry and exit. Despite multiple efforts to calm him, his behaviour escalated, leading to a tragic turn of events,” Irene stated.

However, without warning, Bassey opened fire on bystanders, hitting three people. One of the victims, 41-year-old Ijeoma Wilson Obot, later died from her injuries.

The other two victims, identified as Charles Mkpang and another individual, are receiving medical treatment and are reportedly in stable condition.

Irene explained that security teams swiftly intervened, disarming and arresting the rogue officer. He is now in custody as investigations continue.

“Following the incident, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) for Zone 6, along with the Cross River State Police Command Management Team, visited the injured victims in the hospital.

“The AIG also made a donation to assist with their medical expenses and assured the public that justice would be served,” Irene added.
