Policy alignment has been described as the best method to enhance the growth of technical education across Nigeria and harness it’s benefits for national development.

These were the words of the lawmaker representing Ondo West Constituency 1 at the Ondo State House of Assembly, Otunba Moyinolorun Ogunwumiju at the Matriculation ceremony of John Bosco Institute of Technology (JOBITECH), Ondo.

The lawmaker who was the Keynote Speaker at the Matriculation ceremony made this known while speaking on the topic “Prospects for Technical and Vocational Education Training: Bridging the Gap between Policy Document and Implementation.”

Otunba Moyinolorun Ogunwumiju underscored the paramount role of science and technology in contemporary Nigeria and the global landscape. He highlighted the promising prospects of technical and vocational education, stressing its pivotal role in equipping individuals with practical skills essential across diverse industries.

He said “The prospect for technical and vocational education and training is promising. These programs empower individuals with practical skills that are in high demand across various industries, fostering self-reliance and contributing to economic growth. However, the gap between policy formulation and implementation remains a significant obstacle.

He added that it will take a multi-faceted approach to harness the huge potentials of technical education for the development of the country.

“We need a comprehensive review of existing policies to identify gaps and inconsistencies. We must ensure that these policies are not just paperwork but are actionable roadmaps for tangible progress.

“Collaboration is key. Government bodies, educational institutions, the private sector and non-governmental organizations must work together to design, fund and execute vocational training programs that meet the needs of both learners and industries.

“We must invest in the infrastructure required for technical and vocational education, including modern equipment, well-trained instructors, and up-to-date curriculum development. This investment is essential for ensuring the quality and relevance of training.

“We must promote the value of technical and vocational skills. Encouraging young people to pursue these paths and de-stigmatizing vocational education is crucial. This can be achieved through public awareness campaigns and career counseling.

“Lastly, we must adapt to changing technological trends. Technical and vocational education should evolve to incorporate the latest technologies and skills that are relevant in today’s job market.”
