Nigeria’s sole representative in CAF Clubs Competitions, Rivers United have been knocked out of the CAF Confederations Cup for the 2023/24 season.
The Rivers State based club crashed out of the competition after losing 2-0 to the defending champions, USM Alger in the second leg of their quarter-final clash in Algeria on Sunday night.
They lost the two legged clash with a 2-1 aggregate scoreline USM Alger after securing a 1-0 victory in the first leg match played in Nigeria.
The North Africans secured a 2-0 home victory which sent the Nigerian powerhouse crashing out of the prestigious competition and ending the West African country’s hope of winning continental football silverware this season.
Rivers United’s attention will now be focused on climbing up the table in the Nigeria Professional Football League where they are currently ranked 17th and in the relegation zone.
However, they have played six matches lesser than most of the other teams are expected to start playing the outstanding matches now that they will no longer be involved in continental engagements.
