Rivers United of Port Harcourt have solidified their position at the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League Group B standing with a 1-0 victory over rival Sunshine Stars of Akure.
The match which took place at the Adokiye Amesimaka stadium in Portharcourt kicked off at 4pm was a keenly affair as both sides went for victory right from kick-off.
It did not take too long before the Rivers outfit scored the opening goal of the encounter as Morice Chukwu found the back of the net in the 27th minute of the encounter.
Despite several attempts by both sides, they could not add to the tally as the home team picked up all three points while the away side were left to rue missing an opportunity to close the gap on the defending champion and secure a place in the top three.
With this development, Rivers United are top of the log with 30 points from 16 matches while Sunshine Stars are 4th with 24 points from 17 matches. Rivers United are well positioned to progress into the NPFL Championship Group where they will be competing for the league title against other promoted teams.
