Liverpool Football Club of England were in their devastating best on Wednesday night at Anfield as they beat Chelsea 4-1 to maintain their five points lead at the summit of the Premier League table.
The Reds, who are hunting for Premier League glory this season welcomed a Chelsea side which they have failed to beat in their last seven meetings to Anfield which has been a fortress for the home side all season long.
The Blues, who have had a terrible start to the season have returned to winning ways recently after beating Middlesbrough 6-1 to advance to the final of the EFL Carabao Cup where they will meet Liverpool on February 25.
A quick and electric start from the home side kept the Blues pegged in their half and mostly chasing after the ball. The Reds were creating chances and firing on all cylinders right from kick off while the away side waited to hit them on the break.
After several missed chances, Liverpool FC finally broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute as Diogo Jota danced through Chelsea’s defence before firing an unstoppable shot into goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic’s net.
The Reds soon doubled their lead as youngster, Conor Bradley unleashed a rocket of a shot which sailed past Petrovic in the 39th minute. It could have gotten worse for the Blues in first half stoppage time but Liverpool forward missed his penalty kick much to the relief of the away side.
The home side made it 3-0 in the second half after Dominik Szoboszlai connected with a Conor Bradley’s cross and planted a well placed header inside the net.
Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku reduced the deficit with a beautiful strike in the 71st minute but Luis Diaz scored in the 79th minute to put the final in the away side’s coffin much to the excitement of the Anfield crowd.
With the win, Liverpool FC maintained their five points lead over Manchester City who defeated Burnley 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium and manager Jurgen Klopp got his 200th Premier League match win in 318 matches.
Chelsea on the other hand are still a long way from getting into the European spots and will need a quick turnaround to get themselves into qualifying for European football next season or risk repeating what happened to them this season.
