Egyptian and Liverpool FC forward, Mohammed Salah was in an inspirational form on Sunday when the Merseyside giant visited the home of their greatest rival for matchday three of the 2024/2025 Premier League season.
Salah played an important role in deciding the match as he provided two assists and scored one goal in his side’s 3-0 demolition of the Red Devils at the Theater of Dreams.
Liverpool came into the match against Manchester United as the favourite to pick all three points and had an easy job as their host did not put up much resistance before surrendering to their dominance and allowing them to dictate how the match was played.
Despite parading famous footballers like Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, Andre Onana, Lisandro Martinez, De Ligt, Casemiro, Kobbie Maino, Zirkzee, Garnacho and others in their line-up, Manchester United failed to impress their fans who filled up the stadium to cheer them to victory against their greatest rival.
It did not take too long before the Reds to hit the back of the net as Trent Alexander-Arnold finished off a swift move by Liverpool in the 8th minute of play. However, his effort was chalked-off after the intervention of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) which spotted Mohammed Salah in an offside position during build-up to the goal.
The Red Devils however failed to heed the warning signs as they allowed the Reds space and time to take the lead in the 35th minute as a wayward pass by Casemiro was capitalized upon by the Reds who attacked quickly with Salah crossing the ball into the box for Luis Diaz to score a beautiful header.
The lead was soon doubled in the seven minute later with Casemiro again the culprit as the ball was snatched from him and the Reds went on a quick counter attack which saw Salah slipped the ball towards Luis Diaz who took an unstoppable shot on the turn which left goalkeeper Andre Onana helpless.
Mohammed Salah added the third goal in the second half as Kobbie Maino was bounced off the ball in a dangerous area which left the Red Devils’ defense exposed. Dominik Szoboszlai quickly supplied an inch perfect pass to Salah who slammed it past Andre Onana to bury any hope of Red Devils staging a comeback.
The result pushed both teams in different directions as Liverpool are second on the Premier League table having picked up nine points from three matches while Manchester United are occupying 14th position with three points from three matches.
Manchester United Manager, Erik Ten Haag has come under heavy criticism from supporters and pundits for his team’s failure to put up a decent challenge against Liverpool despite the huge signings made by the club during the summer transfer window.
Ten Haag however hit back at his critics by reminding them of the team’s development in the last two years where they have won the Carabao and FA Cup trophies in succession. He added that his team is the most successful side after Manchester City in the last two years and they are hoping to win more trophies this season.
