Ondo State owned football club, Sunshine Stars of Akure have been eliminated from this season’s President Federation Cup after losing out to Kano Pillars on Wednesday.
The Akure Gunners as they are popularly known took on Kano Pillars in the quarter-final of the President Federation Cup with hopes of making it into the last four at the expense of the Kano state and NPFL powerhouse.
The match which took place in Abuja offered both teams a shot a winning a title this season after their below par performance in the league this season. Both teams relished the opportunity before them and went for it right from the start.
However, Sunshine Stars’ fairytale journey was brought to a sad end after they played out an entertaining 1-1 draw against their opponent before heading into penalty shootout where they lost 5-4 after Lucky Nwafor missed his spot kick.
With the result, Sunshine Stars are out of the competition that could have guaranteed them a piece of silverware this season and will now focus their attention on their relegation battle in the Nigeria Professional Football League.
Meanwhile, EFCC FC, Inter Lagos and Sokoto United all crashed out after losing their own matches while Abia Warriors, Kebbi United and El-Kanemi Warriors progressed into the last four with hopes of winning the coveted trophy.
