Players, management and supporters of Sunshine Stars of Akure had a reason to celebrate yesterday as their team moved up the NPFL standings with an hard-fought victory over Sporting Lagos in Akure.
The Akure based football club who have been struggling with consistency this season had it all to do when they welcomed Sporting Lagos to the Ondo State capital for a South West derby on Sunday.
The Edith Agoye led were able to establish their dominance quickly in the match as Moses Omodumeke gave them the lead in the 24th minute. This gave the home side a cushion they will protect till the match ended.
Despite efforts made by both teams to change the scoreline, it remained unchanged as the home side secured a 1-0 victory that moved them up to 11th on the NPFL table with 13 points accumulated from 10 matches. They have also scored 13 goals and conceded 13 goals during that time.
Meanwhile, Sporting Lagos are currently 14th on the log with 12 points from 10 matches. Their current position is in contrast with where they were when they began the season in blistering form that sent a strong signal to the other teams.
Sunshine Stars will be traveling to Aba where they will be facing defending champion, Enyimba FC of Aba in their next encounter while Sporting Lagos will be at home when they face Katsina United.
