The Super Eagles of Nigeria have secured their place at the next Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast after a 3-2 win over Leone Stars of Sierra Leone in Monrovia on Sunday.
The Super Eagles came into the match knowing that a victory will help them seal qualifications for the showpiece tournament and were handed an early lead as their hitman, Victor Osimhen scored in the 19th minute of the match.
The lead was soon double as Victor Osimhen scored again in the 32nd minute before Mustapha Bundu scored in the 41st minute to pull one back for the Leone Stars. The scoreline remained unchanged as both team went in for the break.
The Super Eagles could not increase the tally early in the second half and were shocked by Augustus Kargbo in the 84th minute of the match as he scored to level the scoreline.
The match looked destined for a 2-2 final score until Kelechi Iheanacho struck in the fifth minute of stoppage time to calm Nigerians’ nerves and hand the Super Eagles a 2-3 victory over the stubborn Leone Stars.
With the result, the Super Eagles have qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations with a match to spare. They will be facing Sao Tome and Principe in their final group match and will be hoping to repeat the 10-0 trashing they handed their opponents when they met in Morocco.
