The Super Falcons of Nigeria handed world cup co-hosts, Australia a shock 3-2 defeat in their second group game of the ongoing Women’s World Cup to boost their chance of qualifying for the second round.
The Nigerians who had drawn Canada in their first group game came into the match against Australia as underdogs but left with all three points.
Goals from Uchenna Kanu, Osinachi Ohale and Asisat Oshoala ensured that the Super Falcons secured maximum points against the co-hosts to boosts their hopes of progressing in the tournament.
The hosts were ahead a few minutes before half-time when Foord found Van Egmond who scored much to the excitement of the home fans but were soon pegged back as Uchenna Kanu scored the equalizer with what was the last kick of the first half.
Osinachi Ohale gave Nigeria the lead in the second half and Asisat Oshoala increased the margin by capitalizing on a defensive mix-up to hand Nigeria a 3-1 lead.
Even though Alanna Kennedy managed to score an header deep into stoppage time, the Super Falcons managed to hold on for a memorable 2-3 victory over the Aussies and move to the top of group standings.
The Super Falcons will face already knocked out Ireland in their last match knowing that a draw might be enough to move them into the second round while Canada battle Australia for a place in the second round.
Meanwhile, Asisat Oshoala becomes the first Nigerian and first female African player to score at three different editions of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
