Billionaire and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the United Bank for Africa, (UBA), Tony Elumelu, has revealed his plans on the possibility of acquiring a Nigeria Professional Football League, (NPFL) club.
Elumelu made this revelation on Monday via his X (formerly Twitter) handle where he described the plan to acquire an NPFL Club as a good idea of fulfilling his Corporate Social Responsibility.
He tweeted this while reacting to an X user’s call for top businessmen and corporations to acquire Nigeria league clubs to drive competition.
An X user, LawyerDayo had tweeted “Can we get the President and Ministry of Sport to weigh in on the big corporations in Nigeria to buy at least one league club as part of CSR? Imagine Dangote buys Kano Pillars, BUA buys Kwara United, Elumelu acquires Rivers United, and Geregu takes over 3SC. Imagine the competition.”
Elumelu responded by saying “This is a nice idea. The Sports Minister, Senator John Enoh @OwanEnoh, is already thinking along this line and has approached me and we are already evaluating viability.”
The acquisition of any of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) club by a business man of Tony Elumelu’s status is expected to be a watershed moment for the revival of the nation’s domestic league football which has suffered for so long.
