The Emirates FA Cup defending champions, Manchester United have been knocked out of this season’s competition after a penalty shootout loss to Premier League side, Fulham FC at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Red Devils failed in their quest to secure a place in the Quarter-final of the competition as they failed to get past Marco Silva’s dangerous Fulham at the theatre of dreams.
The match ended with a 1-1 scoreline after 120 minutes which forced both teams into a penalty shootout to decide who goes through to the next stage of the competition and who gets knocked out.
While Fulham converted all their four penalty kicks taken during the shootout, Manchester United only scored three out of the five they took during the shootout and that sealed their fate.
Victor Lindelof and Joshua Zirkzee failed to convert the fourth and fifth spot kick into goals as goalkeeper Bernd Leno became the Cottagers’ Emirates FA Cup hero at Old Trafford on Sunday.
With the result, Manchester United are out of contention in three of the four of the major titles they are competing for this season and have only the UEFA Europa League to salvage what has been an unimpressive season under new manager, Ruben Amorim.
Under former manager, Erik Ten Haag, Manchester United won the Emirates FA Cup to sneak into Europe after finishing below the European qualification places during the 2023/2024 season.
