The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has directed that the planned nationwide protest against recent hike in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) will commence by 7:30am across all the States of the Federation and the FCT on August 2.
Other issues set to be addressed through the protest include the increase in tuition fees in public schools, withheld salaries of lecturers and workers in the universities, refusal to revamp national refineries, failure to cut down cost of governance among others.
NLC Head of Information, Comrade Benson Upah, informed journalists that workers and civil society groups will converged at the Unity Fountain in Abuja to kickstart the protest while State chapters will equally commence protest at the same time in their state capitals.
Upah went on to say that all the affiliate unions of the NLC thought their State branches, have mobilized their members and are already for the protest. He added that security agencies have also been informed about the protest and are expected to provide security for all protesters.
“We have consolidated on our arrangement and the fillers we are getting is that Nigerians are ready to be on the street to express their feelings and outrage over the harsh economic situation in the country.”
Meanwhile, a look at the union’s Twitter handle showed how busy the union are with the protest as they posting various messages directed towards the execution of the planned nationwide protest.
Venues of the state protests were posted alongside messages debunking rumours about the union considering suspending the planned nationwide protest.
They warned that the International community will be paying attention to how the Federal government respond to the protest to see how they truly respect the rights of citizens to express their grievances against government policies.
