Nigeria’s senior female basketball team, the D’Tigress continued their legacy of dominating the sport in the Africa continent with yet another triumph in the FIBA Women’s 2023 Afrobasket in Kigali, Rwanda.
The D’Tigress of Nigeria as they are popularly known walked over and steam rolled their opponents at the tournament with eye-catching performances that solidified their position as the best in the continent and a major force on the global stage.
The team led by Rena Wakama defeated every opponent they faced in Rwanda and never let their guard down even when they faced the more dangerous Senegalese in the final match.
In their first match, they took on DR Congo and dominated the Congolese by winning every single quarter to end up with a 69-35 scoreline at the end of proceedings.
They continued their dominance in their second match as they won three out of four quarters against Egypt to secure a 83-65 win over the Egyptians.
In their third match, they took on a strong Mozambique team who gave the D’ Tigress a run for their money. They still managed to win two out of four quarters and got themselves over the line with a 59-52 victory.
They took on Rwanda in their fourth match and showed they are way above their host by winning three out of four quarters to secure a 79-48 win which moved them into the final match where they would face Senegal.
In the final match held at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda, the D’ Tigress defeated Senegal 84-74 to win the coveted title for an unprecedented fourth time in a row which solidified their status as a dominant force on the continent.
Coach Rena Wakama also wrote her name in history as she became the first woman to lead a team to win the Afrobasket title since the tournament began.
She even achieved this without having a blemish as her girls won every single game they participated in at the tournament which adds more details to her record.
Bamako, Dakar, Yaounde and now Kigali. The D’Tigress have won four Afrobasket titles on the bounce and six in total.
Coach Rena Wakama and her team should be setting their sight on the global stage now. They should not get too contented with dominating Africa. The D’ Tigress need to send a message to the world.
