A former President of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernandez has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for drug trafficking.
He was handed the sentence and an $8 million fine by a US judge who found him guilty of drug trafficking offenses.
Juan Orlando Hernandez was extradited from Honduras to the United States of America after the US Department of Justice filed three drug-trafficking and firearms related charges against him in 2022.
He was accused of conspiring with drug cartels during his tenure as President of Honduras as they moved more than 400 tons of cocaine through Honduras toward the United States and receiving millions of dollars in bribes from the cartels which he used to fuel his rise in Honduran politics.
Juan Orlando Hernandez, who was president of Honduras between 2014 and 2022 insisted that he is innocent and wrongly convicted for crimes he did not commit.
