The Super Falcons of Nigeria are on the brink of getting knocked our of the ongoing Olympics Women’s Football competition in Paris after recording a slim 1-0 loss to Spain on Sunday.
The Nigerians, who lost their first match against Brazil with a similar scoreline came into the match against the World Champions securing a win to bolster their hopes of securing qualification from their group.
However, they were dominated and outplayed by their more fancied Spanish opponents who controlled the match from start to finish.
The Super Falcons who are the best team in Africa were restricted to sitting back and defending their goal area against the barrages of attacks launched by the Spanish team inspired by Alexia Puttelas.
Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was active in goal as she alongside her defensive units stopped most of the shots fired in on goal by the Spanish side.
However, the defense was eventually breached in the 87th minute as a well taken free kick by Alexia Puttelas sailed directly into the net leaving Chiamaka Nnadozie stranded and helpless.
The Super Falcons were presented a shot at redemption deep into added time as Ihezuo beat the Spanish offside trap and went one-on-one with the goalkeeper but could not score as the ball hit the goalkeeper’s outstretched leg.
The defeat condemned the Super Falcons to two losses in two matches and in need of a miracle to secure a win against Japan in their last group match which may be insufficient to qualify for the next round of the competition.
Meanwhile, Africa’s other representative in the competition, Copper Queens of Zambia suffered a monumental collapse as they threw away a 5-2 lead against Australia to end up with a 6-5 loss.
