NLC Rejects Telecommunications Tariffs Hike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly criticized the federal government’s approval of a 50% increase in telecommunication tariffs, describing it as a harsh burden on Nigerians.

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, titled “50% Telecom Tariff Hike: Another Burden Too Harsh,” NLC President Joe Ajaero expressed outrage at the decision, which was approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

“This decision, coming at a time when Nigerian workers and the masses are grappling with unprecedented economic hardship, is a clear assault on their welfare and an abandonment of the people to corporate fat cats.”

The NLC noted that telecommunication services are essential for communication, work, and access to information. However, the increase would significantly strain Nigerian workers, who already spend an estimated 10% of their income on telecom services.

“For a worker earning the current minimum wage of ₦70,000, this hike translates to an increase from ₦7,000 to ₦10,500 per month, representing 15% of their salary. This is unsustainable.”

“This glaring disparity shows a troubling reality: the government appears more aligned with corporate interests than with the needs of the workers and citizens it is meant to serve. When will the government stand for the people it swore to protect?” Ajaero questioned.

The NLC called on the NCC and the National Assembly to halt the implementation of the tariff hike and initiate a conversation on the matter. Ajaero emphasized that if an increase is deemed necessary, it should be more reasonable than the current 50%.

He also urged Nigerian workers and citizens to reject the tariff hike and prepare for collective action, including a possible nationwide boycott of telecommunication services, to demand a reversal.

“This fight is for our dignity, our rights, and our survival as a people. The NLC remains committed to defending the interests of Nigerian workers and the masses. Together, we will resist this injustice and demand that the government prioritizes its citizens over corporate profits.”
