The D’Tigress of Nigeria reached a major milestone by winning a record-breaking fifth straight Women’s AfroBasket title in Ivory Coast.
The Nigeria women’s basketball team became the first country to achieve such feat after an entertaining 78-64 win over Mali in the final match of the 2025 Women’s Afrobasket on Sunday.
Led by Coach Rena Wakama, the D’Tigress have now gone ten years unbeaten in the competition despite facing strong competition from the likes of Senegal and Mali.
The D’Tigress showed dominance throughout the competition with their abilities and experience coupled with their squad depth giving them the edge over all the teams they battled in the competition.
They started the tournament with an overwhelming win over Rwanda as they recorded a commanding 92-45 win which was followed by a rather slim 60-55 victory over Mozambique in the second match.
They went up against Cameroon in the quarter-final and delivered a demolition job as they walloped their West African neighbour 83-47 to progress into the semi-final where they face Senegal.
Against Senegal, the D’Tigress were made to work very hard for their win as they needed to rally from behind to secure a 75-68 win which set them up for a title match against Mali.
Mali secured their place in the final match after securing a dominant 76-50 win over South Sudan but did not have enough in their tank to overcome a ruthless D’Tigress led by Coach Rena Wakama.
Though the Nigerian ladies lost the first quarter to Mali, they won the remaining quarters to ensure they claim a memorable 78-64 win and the Afrobasket title for a record breaking fifth consecutive times.
