The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) successfully received a group of 100 Nigerian returnees from Algeria at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Wednesday, March 25, 2026.

The repatriation was carried out under the Assisted Voluntary Return (AVR) programme, a collaborative initiative between the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Federal Government of Nigeria. The flight, operated by Air Algerie, touched down at the Cargo Terminal at approximately 14:40 hours.

The profile of the returnees consists primarily of 96 adults, comprising 77 males and 19 females. Additionally, the group included four infants, split evenly between two males and two females. Upon arrival, officials from the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) immediately commenced biometric registration and documentation to establish accurate records, a vital step for the citizens’ formal reentry into the country.

Demonstrating the Federal Government’s commitment to a safe and dignified homecoming, various agencies provided immediate humanitarian aid on-site. The Lagos Operations Office of NEMA, alongside the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), ensured that the returnees’ basic needs were met. This included the provision of food and potable water to address immediate nutritional requirements following their journey.

Comprehensive support services were also stationed at the terminal to handle logistics and health concerns. Medical teams and ambulance services were available for individuals with pressing health issues, while logistics personnel assisted with luggage handling to ease the movement of the returnees. This coordinated effort was designed to minimize the stress of the transition and provide a structured environment for the group.

The reception concluded with general coordination and counseling services aimed at facilitating a seamless reintegration process. By providing a humane and organized welcome, the involved agencies intend to support these individuals as they begin the journey of resettling within their home communities. This latest arrival underscores the ongoing partnership between domestic and international bodies to manage migration challenges effectively.
