The University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH) in Ondo has significantly enhanced its clinical capabilities through the procurement and distribution of a wide array of modern medical equipment.
This strategic upgrade aims to improve patient monitoring and clinical outcomes across several critical departments, including the Accident and Emergency unit, operating theatres, and post-surgical wards. The hospital’s leadership emphasized that these advancements are part of a broader commitment to providing world-class healthcare services to the region.
Key among the new acquisitions are 31 high-end multiparameter monitors and specialized tools for ophthalmology and neonatal care, including new incubators for premature infants.
To strengthen its diagnostic arm, the hospital has installed a Fluorescence Immunoassay Analyzer in its laboratory, enabling the conduct of specialized diagnostic tests. Additionally, the Accident and Emergency Department has been expanded and restructured to better manage the increasing demand for urgent medical services.
Professor Akinwunmi Akinbodewa, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), lauded the Chief Medical Director, Professor Michael Olumide Gbala, for his visionary leadership.
He noted that the prudent management of resources was instrumental in securing this equipment, which has already begun to yield positive results in patient satisfaction. Professor Akinbodewa highlighted that the hospital’s infrastructure and medical base are undergoing a transformative phase to meet international standards.
The hospital management also expressed deep appreciation to the Ondo State Government, led by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, for its consistent support in upgrading the facility. Ongoing government-led initiatives include the provision of state-of-the-art diagnostic technology, such as a 160-slice cardiac-enabled CT scan, a 1.5 Tesla MRI machine, 3D mammography systems, and advanced laparoscopy and endoscopy equipment. These investments are positioning UNIMEDTH as a premier hub for specialized medical care in Nigeria.
Looking ahead, UNIMEDTH is set to achieve more milestones, including the establishment of a fully equipped In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) unit. Plans are also underway to construct residential accommodations for resident doctors within the hospital quarters to improve staff welfare and efficiency.
Through these continuous improvements, UNIMEDTH remains dedicated to ensuring accessible, high-quality, and efficient medical care for all patients.
