George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor marked their senior international debuts with goals as Nigeria overturned an early deficit to defeat Madagascar 2-1 in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo on Friday.
The Super Eagles were forced to come from behind after Madagascar struck early at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, leaving the home side chasing the game in front of their supporters.
Nigeria gradually grew into the contest and got their reward deep into the first half when Ilenikhena levelled in added time. The goal gave the hosts a much-needed boost as both sides headed into the break at 1-1.
After the restart, Nigeria increased the tempo and began to dictate proceedings, with Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi providing control in the middle of the pitch as the Super Eagles pushed for the winning goal.
Usor eventually completed the turnaround when he found the decisive goal in the second half, handing Eric Chelle a winning start to his side’s Group L campaign and ensuring the two Nigerian debutants provided both goals.
Nigeria’s three points put them level with Guinea-Bissau at the top of the group, with the latter ahead on goal difference.
The Super Eagles next travel to Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, September 29, while Madagascar welcome Tanzania on the same day. Victor Osimhen missed Nigeria’s opening qualifiers because of injury
