In a resolute effort to safeguard public health and restore urban order, authorities in Ondo West Local Government Area have issued an urgent call to action, demanding an immediate end to indiscriminate waste dumping and unauthorised construction across the municipality.
The local authority attributed the increasing cases of flooding in parts of the council area to indiscriminate construction on natural drainage channels and the improper disposal of waste into gutters. It also urged residents to desist from activities that obstruct the free flow of water to prevent further flooding.
The position was contained in a statement issued on Friday, 31 July 2026, by the Supervisor for Education, Information and Social Services, Hon. Michael Akinduro, who expressed concern over the recurring flooding incidents across the local government area.
According to the statement, investigations revealed that buildings erected on waterways, as well as the dumping of dirt, sand and refuse into drainage systems, have significantly contributed to the problem.
The statement warned that such practices block drainage channels, leading to avoidable flooding, the destruction of properties and threats to human life.
Residents were therefore advised to refrain from constructing buildings on drainage channels and to stop disposing of waste into gutters.
It further called on members of the public to maintain a clean environment, actively participate in routine environmental sanitation exercises and comply with existing environmental regulations.
The council stressed that collective responsibility remains essential to preventing flooding and ensuring a safer and healthier environment for residents of Ondo West.
The statement also commended the efforts of the Ondo State Government and other stakeholders for their prompt response to the flooding challenge.
It specifically appreciated the intervention of the Governor of Ondo State, Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, the Executive Chairman of Ondo West Local Government, Ayotunde Akinfolarin, and other relevant officials at both the state and local government levels.
According to the statement, the council expressed confidence that the continued support and decisive actions of the government and other stakeholders would provide lasting solutions to the flooding menace.
