In response to the announcement of the removal of subsidy paid on Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) and the subsequent hiking of prices of the product by NNPC Limited and other marketers across the country, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has declared a nationwide nationwide strike.
The nationwide strike which is scheduled to commence on next Wednesday was declared following a meeting of its National Executive Council (NEC) held in Abuja today over the fuel subsidy removal and subsequent hike in the pump price of petrol across the country.
The meeting which had in attendance all Presidents, General Secretaries, Treasurers of all NLC’s affiliate unions; State Chairpersons and Secretaries of the NLC State Councils, Chairperson of the NLC Youth Committee and members of the National Administrative Council (NAC) was concluded with an agreement that an industrial action is needed to protect the interest of workers and all Nigerians.
Nigeria Labour Congress is demanding that status quo returns before they can have any formal engagement with the government on the issue. They are also demanding that protective measures be put in place for the Nigerian workforce and all Nigerians before the government can remove fuel subsidy.
