The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has expressed satisfaction with the recent alignment of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) regarding the proposed national minimum wage.
Sowore in a Facebook post on Friday, noted that the labour movement’s unified stance reflects a stance his party had consistently championed, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing fight for workers’ economic relief.
Commending the development, the former presidential candidate highlighted that the consensus validates the party’s long-standing advocacy for the working class.
Sowore stated, “It is encouraging that the leadership of the Nigerian labour movement @NLCHeadquarters and @TUCNigeria has finally arrived at the same position the @aacparty adopted long ago,”
He emphasised that a united front between labor leadership and progressive political forces significantly amplifies the demand for economic justice.
Reiterating the urgent need for a realistic wage benchmark, Sowore insisted that a monthly minimum wage of ₦500,000 is critical to offset the severe impact of inflation and the rising cost of living.
According to the AAC leader, “Nigerian workers deserve a national minimum wage of no less than ₦500,000. The demand is both necessary and long overdue in the face of the country’s economic realities and soaring cost of living.”
With the main labor centers now aligned on the half-a-million-naira benchmark, Sowore urged stakeholders to move beyond public declarations toward tangible engagement.
He asserted that “now that there is consensus, the focus must shift from declarations to action.
“Let’s unite and fight until Nigerian workers receive a living wage of at least ₦500,000.”
The AAC flagbearer further charged Nigerian workers to organize and actively demand their rights, framing the proposed living wage as a basic necessity rather than a favour from the government.
