Nigeria Rolls Out FreeTV To Expand Access to Free Television Nationwide

In a landmark move for the nation’s broadcasting landscape, Nigeria has officially launched FreeTV, a revolutionary national digital television platform designed to provide households across the country with access to free digital television. Rolled out today, June 17, 2026, the service promises clearer pictures, enhanced audio and an expanded roster of Nigerian content without any monthly subscription fees.

The launch marks a critical milestone in the delivery of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” which emphasizes digital inclusion, job creation, local enterprise, and the strategic use of technology to elevate the daily lives of citizens.

Operating as a core component of Nigeria’s ongoing Digital Switch-Over (DSO) programme, FreeTV aims to bridge the digital divide and ensure that no citizen is left behind as the country transitions fully from analogue to digital broadcasting. The platform significantly democratizes information and entertainment, offering viewers access to over 100 national, regional, and state channels.

The diverse lineup spans news, sports, movies, music, children’s programming, and educational content, alongside dedicated channels broadcasting in Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo to serve the nation’s rich linguistic heritage.

To maximize accessibility, the federal government has ensured that FreeTV is available through multiple distribution vectors, including satellite, terrestrial transmission and a dedicated mobile app.

This multi-platform approach ensures comprehensive nationwide coverage, allowing citizens to connect seamlessly whether they reside in bustling major cities, regional towns, or remote rural communities that were previously excluded from earlier DSO pilot phases. Furthermore, the infrastructure has been optimized to reach areas that lacked reliable broadcast signals in the past.

Importantly, the government has clarified that citizens do not need to incur the high expense of purchasing new television sets to enjoy the service. Existing analogue and older digital televisions can easily receive FreeTV by connecting to compatible DVB-T2 or DVB-S2 set-top box decoders. For households that already own compatible free-to-air decoders, no new hardware purchases are necessary, making the transition financially seamless for millions of families nationwide.

Speaking on the economic impact of the rollout, Mr. Charles Ebuebu, Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), emphasized that FreeTV aligns directly with the administration’s vision to expand access and integrate every Nigerian into the growing digital economy.

Beyond providing free, high-quality family entertainment, the platform is structured to vitalize the local media ecosystem. It will heavily support Nigeria’s creative and broadcast economy through a network of regional production studios situated in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Kano, and Benin, creating immediate opportunities for content producers, editors, camera operators, sound engineers, and young creatives.

With the final, definitive analogue switch-off scheduled for December 31, 2028, authorities are urging the public to begin immediate preparations by checking their current decoder compatibility and downloading the official mobile application. To facilitate a smooth transition, the NBC has established dedicated support channels, advising citizens to visit the official portal at www.freetv.ng, email queries to dso@nbc.gov.ng, or contact the commission directly via their hotline or nearest zonal office for further guidance
