FG Approves 50% Train Fare Discount Nationwide for Eid-el-Kabir

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a 50% reduction in train fares nationwide to ease transportation costs for passengers during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration period.

This subsidy applies to all routes operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation and will take effect from May 26 to June 1, 2026.

According to a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Engr. Funsho Adebiyi, the initiative is a deliberate effort to reduce the financial burden on citizens during the Sallah season, a period when intercity travel demand typically peaks. Under this intervention, passengers will only be required to pay half of the standard approved fares.

For commuters who had already purchased their tickets at the original rates prior to the announcement, the Ministry assured that they will not be disadvantaged. These passengers will be granted rebates equivalent to 50% of their ticket value, which can be redeemed for future trips before they expire.

Despite the influx of passengers expected due to the fare slash, officials confirmed that train schedules and operational timetables will remain unchanged. Travelers are, however, strongly urged to adhere to all safety guidelines and arrive early at the stations to avoid congestion and ensure smooth boarding.
