Nigerian actor Lanre Adediwura has opened up about his decision not to return to the hit MultiChoice series Wura, citing severe financial strain and missed career opportunities as the primary reasons.
Financial Struggles
Despite the show’s popularity, Adediwura revealed that the production left him financially unstable. He disclosed that he spent more money during filming than he earned, stating that for six months after the show, he was nearly destitute and relied on neighborly support for basic needs. He credits YouTube productions for eventually helping him regain his financial footing.
Restrictive Contracts
The actor explained that the production’s demands prevented him from taking on other lucrative roles. While he was initially told he could work on other projects, he was ultimately barred from leaving the set for 11 months.
This restriction caused him to lose significant roles, most notably the character of Aláàfin Abiodun in the film House of Gaa, despite having translated the script from English to Yorùbá for the director.
Unfulfilled Promises
Adediwura expressed disappointment that the production team failed to fulfill several promises made during negotiations. While he appreciated the creative depth of his character, he felt the professional trade-off was not worth the personal cost.
No Fear of Legal Reprimand
Addressing potential backlash, Adediwura stated he is not worried about legal issues regarding his public comments. He noted that he contributed original nuances and catchphrases to the show—such as “Friends for life”—which the production continues to use today.
