NPFL Set for Massive Overhaul as 2026/27 Champions to Pocket ₦1 Billion, Players Assured ₦2 Million Minimum Wage

The champions of the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season will receive a minimum prize money of ₦1 billion, marking a massive increase from the previous ₦200 million payout. This significant upgrade was announced on Tuesday in Abuja by Shehu Dikko, the chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC).

The announcement followed a high-level meeting between Dikko and top officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Beyond the historic grand prize, the football stakeholders also agreed to introduce a mandatory minimum wage of ₦2 million for all NPFL players, a move aimed at enhancing player welfare across the league.

During the briefing, Dikko broke down the financial rewards for the top-performing teams. “A major highlight of the meeting was that the champions of the 2026/27 NPFL season will receive a minimum prize money of ₦1 billion,” the NSC chairman stated. “The runners-up will receive ₦500 million, while the third-placed team will earn ₦300 million, subject to official confirmation by league authorities.”

Dikko described the restructured prize money as a strategic step toward transforming Nigerian football, highlighting its role in boosting the commercial value, professionalism, and competitiveness of the domestic league. He also expressed gratitude for the collaborative spirit of the football governing body, saying, “I want to thank the NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau, and the General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, for a very productive engagement. The issues discussed today are fundamental to the growth and development of Nigerian football.”

Looking ahead, the sports administrator emphasized a shared commitment to elevating the sport nationwide. “Collectively, we share the same ambition and vision of moving Nigerian football forward and ensuring sustained success at every level,” Dikko added.

In addition to the financial overhauls, the leadership of the NSC, NFF, and NPFL reached a consensus on strict regulatory oversight, agreeing that maximum club licensing requirements—rather than just minimum standards—must be rigidly enforced going forward. This development comes on the heels of Enugu Rangers clinching the 2025/26 NPFL title, though official kickoff dates for the upcoming, highly anticipated campaign are yet to be announced.
